Everest 3 pass Trek Difficulties

Three Passes has relatively difficult trek routes, with most of the section rugged and bumpy.
Its trails are more demanding than base camp due to continuous steep hills and mountainous terrains filled with rocks and boulders. Climbing the endless routes with frequent ups and downs makes the trek equally strenuous and exhausting.

The excessive elevation gain makes the trek even harder due to low oxygen that causes acute mountain sickness. Due to high altitude, some hikers have severe effects like difficult respiration, while others have mild symptoms such as nausea, headache, anxiety, and others. Therefore, trekkers must prepare well to tackle the meandering trails of Three Pass that begin from Lukla. They enjoy the scenic flight to Lukla and then navigate the rough course passing through remote Sherpa villages and walking from the bank of Dudh Koshi River.

It walks past several villages, including Tengboche, Dingboche, and Kongma La Pass, before arriving at Imja Khola. From there, the trail takes a steep uphill walk and runs beside the glacial moraine to Dzonglha. Above the Sherpa Valley, the path paves its way through the Ngozumpa glacier and ascends to Gokyo Lake.

At Gokyo, trekkers will be offered an impressive view of snow-capped mountains, tranquil lakes, and stunning landscapes. A day of exploration and the trekkers will descend the trail to the valley via Renjo La Pass.

The hike is relatively more challenging at this section with loose rocks, debris, and continuous uphill climb. After the ascent, the trail runs downhill, passing through Thame, Namche, and Phakding before finishing at Lukla.

Everest 3 Pass Trek Permit Cost

Trekkers of Three Passes need to buy a trekking permit, especially for access to Sagarmatha National Park. The permit fee for SAARC nationals is comparatively low, with US$15 as that of foreign nationals. Foreigners are charged US$20 each person for entry to the sanctuary while Nepalese pay a mere US$1.5.

Trekkers will also have to pay an entry fee of US$ 20 per person to Khumbu Pasang Lahmu Rural Municipality. The amount charged will legally allow them to travel the region for up to 4 weeks but for the further stay, they’ll have to pay an extra USD25. The hikers of Three Passes are strongly recommended to hire a trekking guide who can guide them the way.
